Today Lytro is unveiling a consumer digital camera “Light Field Camera” and Available in early 2012. the camera will come in 8Gb and 16Gb versions, costing $399 and $499, and capable of storing 350 and 750 images respectively in their internal memory. The cameras feature a 35-280mm equivalent, constant F2 lens with what the company is calling an 11 megaray sensor, that captures photos that can be refocused after shooting.

Two versions will be available - an 8Gb model that comes in gray ('Graphite') or blue ('Electric Blue') or a more expensive 'Red-Hot' 16Gb version ($499). The smaller versions will be able to record around 350 images, with the larger version finding space for nearer 750.

After more than a year launched the iPhone 4, today Apple reveal the next generation iPhone at its headquarters in Cupertino, California.

It is rumoured to look similar to the iPhone 4, but contain a more powerful processor. It is also thought the firm will introduce a secondary, cheaper version akin to the iPod Nano, designed to appeal to the Chinese market.

According to WSJ:

General expectations for what has widely and unofficially been dubbed the iPhone 5 are for a slimmer device with a larger touch screen, an improved camera and a relatively speedy chip of the same variety found in the current version of Apple's iPad tablet. There also has been some speculation about possible voice-command capability.

The price is expected to remain consistent with the $199 to $299 charged for an iPhone 4, depending on the amount of memory included.

AT&T on Sunday Sept. 18 launches LTE wireless service in five cities: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. According to the computerworld, AT&T has plans to offer LTE in 15 cities, including the first five, by year's end. The list of additional cities has not been officially announced. In all, service in those 15 cities would cover 70 million Americans.

AT&T already offers three LTE-ready devices, including the HTC Jetstream tablet. The 10.1 tablet runs Android 3.1 and sells for $700 for a two-year contract. AT&T also sells the Elevate 4G hotspot and a Momentum 4G modem for LTE.

According to the news customers can purchase the Nexus S at any Best Buy, Best Buy Mobile specialty store or online at BestBuy.com/Mobile for free with a two-year contract that goes with the free phone.

The Nexus runs Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and is so far the only phone that works directly with Google Wallet and NFC. 9to5 Mac said on Wednesday morning that Apple is planning on releasing new MacBooks and Mac mini's, as well as the ultra-thin Macbook Air. The new MacBook Airs will include Thunderbolt ports, i5 and i7 processor options, and a design with little to no changes from the current models.

"Apple will be releasing four new MacBook Air models. This includes two 11-inch models and two 13-inch models; both screen sizes will come in entry level and upgraded configurations," the report read.

11.6 inch models:
• The base model will include a 1.6 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM, and 64GB of flash storage.
• The more expensive standard configuration also includes a 1.6 GHz processor but upgrades the RAM to 4GB and the storage space to 128 GB.
• A built to order model will also be available from the online store. This option includes a 1.8 GHz processor (first for an 11.6 inch MacBook Air), 4GB of RAM, and for the first time in an 11.6 inch MacBook Air, 256 GB of flash storage.

13.3 inch models:

The new feature was unveiled by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Skype CEO Tony Bates at a news conference at Facebook HQ on Wednesday where Facebook engineer Philip Su provided a walkthrough of the application.

Facebook video calling won't require users to set up a Skype account but will require a one-time setup. This will be triggered the first time someone attempts to call you or you attempt to call someone by clicking the 'Call' button that now appears between the 'Message' and 'Poke' buttons on a friend's profile or at the top right of a chat window.

PSN Back Up: Sony announced their PSN service will back up at this week. Sony also expedited an already planned move of the system to a new data center in a different location that has been under construction and development for several months.
To make up for the downtime, Sony will offer a "Welcome Back" appreciation program for all PlayStation Network and Qriocity users. Sony will be giving out "selected PlayStation entertainment content for free download," 30 days free membership to PlayStation Plus for new and current PS Plus subscribers and 30 days free service to Qriocity subscribers.

Starbucks, the world's largest coffee company unveiled a new logo Wednesday that drops the words encircling its iconic sea nymph and gives her a few subtle updates.Starbucks says the changes amount to more than nips and tucks to its favorite lady. The fresh look goes with a new direction for the company as it makes its way back from its toughest times in its 40-year history.

Starbucks revealed the logo Wednesday to a cheering crowd of employees in its Seattle offices and on a webcast and plans to bring it to stores in March to coincide with the company's 40th anniversary.

Howard Schultz, the CEO of Starbucks say "What is really important here is an evolutionary refinement of the logo, which is a mirror image of the strategy," "This is not just, let's wake up one day and change our logo."

This is the fourth version of Starbucks' logo since the company's beginnings as a small coffee, tea and spice shop in Seattle in 1971. The first update came in 1987, taking the original bare-breasted siren in brown to a more stylized -- and modest -- version in green as the company began to expand. The image was further refined in the 1990s as the company went public and its growth soared.

Intel has confirmed weeks of rumor, filing a $1.4 billion takeover offer for iPhone component supplier, Infineon’s Wireless Solutions business.

Announced last night, the move means Intel’s determined to take a slice of the emerging smartphone business.

“The global demand for wireless solutions continues to grow at an extraordinary rate,” Intel CEO Paul Otellini said in a statement.

“The acquisition of Infineon’s WLS (Wireless Solutions) business strengthens the second pillar of our computing strategy–Internet connectivity–and enables us to offer a portfolio of products that covers the full range of wireless options from Wi-Fi and 3G to WiMax and LTE (4G).”

Infineon ranked fourth in cellular-baseband shipments last year with a 10.7 percent unit share. These are the chips which enable 3G on these devices. The company also supplies Nokia and Samsung.

As rumored, Apple has just introduced a new mouse called the Magic Mouse. This mouse will bring Multi-Touch capabilities to desktop Macs for the first time, something that the iPhone has had since its release in June 2007 and the MacBook Air since it was released in February 2008.

Asus, the computer manufacturer best known for its Eee PCs, is getting ready to enter the eReader market. According to an article in the Times Online this morning, Asus plans to launch two devices: a budget and a premium version. At least the premium version will most likely feature dual screens.
The article is extremely low on details, but judging from what we have seen about Asus' eReaders so far, the main drawback of these devices will be that they won't be based on e-ink screens, the technology that allows the current breed of eReaders to display such crisp letters. Instead, Asus will use conventional LCD screens.

The dual-screen display and the price seem to be the major draws that brought a lot of attention to this story this morning. The price, assuming this rumor is true, is obviously very good and the idea of having two screens is also attractive - though it might not be as practical as having a single, larger screen. In reality, though, it is hard to imagine that an eReader with an LCD screen will be able to conquer the market. Unlike e-ink screens, LCDs need a lot of energy. While you can read a few books on a Kindle without recharging, a dual-screen LCD eReader will need to be recharged far more often - unless Asus weighs it down with a large and heavy battery pack.

One advantage of using LCDs is that they basically turn the device into a small computer. According to the Times, Asus even plans to add a webcam and Wi-Fi to at least the high-end model, though the price of this device will most likely be considerably higher than $150.

Should be enough to keep you going.

Panasonic Toughbook U1 Clinical Computer

The U1 UMPC (Ultra-Mini PC) is a full featured computer running Windows XP or Vista on the new Intel Atom processor, fully compatible with any PC application. Coupled with Toughbook's standard safety components, like withstanding a four foot drop onto concrete, the device may prove to be a winner among doctors and nurses working in hospital wards.

What makes the U1 especially suited for healthcare is a combination of the design considerations put into it. Because of the cooler, more efficient Intel Atom processor, the U1 doesn't have ventilation ports through which liquids can enter. The device is effectively sealed, and Panasonic claims that it can take a good splash and keep on ticking. (Just don't take it SCUBA diving with you. Its not fully water proof.)

Nursing staff and the IT department will also be happy to know that the U1 sports two separate battery slots, which lets the user hot-swap batteries without having to turn off the unit. A hospital can even buy multi-battery chargers to hang on the wall at the nurse's stations for round the clock operation. Somehow this feature seems like it was specifically designed with nurses in mind, who already have enough to think about without having to deal with complicated battery changes during busy hours.

The screen is 5.6 inches and is fully touch sensitive, which means it can be controlled with your finger, not just the stylus like so many tablets out there require. (The advantage becomes obvious once the stylus is accidentally left back at the desk.)

Optionally it can come with a bar code scanner, which can be utilized for device or medication tracking, and a built-in webcam, which we envision can be employed in a futuristic communication system between clinicians in a hospital ward.

Not to say that this is a good general replacement for a real laptop, as it has only 1GB RAM and tops out at 32 GB for a solid state disk drive, but its nice to have all the data and tomographic images of the patient wirelessly accessible at the bedside.
